The department of geography at Ege University has started a survey to determine the social and economic profile of European expatriates in western Turkey. The survey will provide an insight into the lives of foreign immigrants
The social and economic profile of European expatriates in western Turkey is no longer a mystery.
The department of geography at Ege University in İzmir has begun a survey on immigration from European countries to the western coast of Turkey.
The survey, also supported by the faculty of letters, is being carried out by questionnaires on the European population in Marmaris, Kuşadası and Ayvalık, three popular spots among foreigners.
İlkay Südaş, who is responsible for the completion of the survey as a part of his PhD thesis, has been visiting the citizens of European countries who have settled temporarily or permanently in Marmaris, under the guidance of consulates located in İzmir.
After completing the questionnaires in Kuşadası and Ayvalık, Südaş has begun work in Marmaris visiting expatriate community members. "We are trying to determine the social and economic profile of European expatriates who live along the western coast of Turkey," İlkay Südaş told the Hürriyet Daily News & Economic Review. "Aside from that, we also want to see the reasons for immigration to the area."
"We want to know why people move to Marmaris," Südaş said. "What are the reasons for moving away from their homeland? What kind of problems do they have here and in what ways are they trying to find solutions? Are they planning to go back to their home in the future?"
The survey, when completed, will give an idea of the long-term reactions of foreigners who have immigrated to the Turkish coastline: their adaptation to the country and their contribution to Turkey-European Union relations are among the main issues targeted by the survey.
Social problems
The social problems expatriates have, their expectations of central and local governments, their political identity, their children’s adaption to the Turkish education system and many more issues will be revealed through 61 questions in the questionnaire. When it comes to the main problems that expatriates face, Südaş said work permits are the most common issue noted in questionnaires completed in Kuşadası and Ayvalık. This was followed by education of their children and lack of worship facilities.
He said that especially the worship places for the Christian community was a leading deficiency in previous surveys undertaken in Alanya, the popular holiday district in the western city of Antalya.
The survey, covering 300 individuals in Marmaris, Kuşadası and Ayvalık, will be completed by the end of January and results will then be used for scientific purposes.

You can still snap up older apartments from around 50,000 $ and villas in Kusadasi from as low as 100,000 $. These properties tend to in older cooperative style complexes and lack modern facilities, however, they certainly present the rock bottom bargain overseas buyer with an ‘in’ to Turkish homes market.
Modern Kusadasi property comes with a deserved premium. Compared to other Aegean resorts such as Bodrum, Kusadasi offers lower prices when buying property as well as lower cost of living. Most new built homes in Kusadasi include family facilities such as swimming pool and landscaped gardens. Modern villas in Kusadasi start at around 150,000 $ and are generally tastefully appointed, either in small estates with shared pool and landscaped gardens, or on private plots. Should you expect healthy rentals from Kusadasi houses?
Rental potential is good here, particularly if you own a coveted family villa. Expect rental returns of around 5-6%, potentially more if you own a high end Kusadasi property. Prices are rising at a rate of around 8% each year, and ongoing investment into the area’s infrastructure and tourist areas means this upward trajectory should sustain for a good few years.
